There was no TV....... no internet.......no mobile phones......no fast food.....no obesity!!!!
There were no fridges and freezers... everyone had to eat fresh food, whatever was in season.....
no fancy foods flown in from different countries!
There was a pantry in the kitchen where the food was kept or I have just been told a hole in the wall or in the basement!
But ....2 mainstays that were used a lot were sugar and salt!!!!
So tell me.... how come there are lots of octogenarians and nonagenarians, who were brought up on sugar and salt, still going strong today?
Was it because cars were only for the wealthy and everybody walked or cycled?
No additives and preservatives in the food so not consuming chemicals when eating meals?
How many over 80's will there be in 40 or 50 years from now........ the generation who are eating fast food, getting no exercise and have cars to take them door to door.
1918 was the end of the 1st world war.......... Armistice Day 11th day of the11th month.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow.
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
The Royal Air Force was founded in England...... amazing as the first flight was only 8 years prior by Wilbur and Wright.
Ration books for butter, lard, margarine, meat and sugar were introduced.
The GPO raised postage rates to 1 1/2d
Women over 21 were given the right to stand as a Member of Parliament
School leaving age in England and Wales was raised to 14
The first national election was held in which women were allowed to vote
So the question is...... is this a better world we live in?
My gentleman says he is not sure, he doesn't think that the knowledge we have now from TV etc is necessarily for the better! Unfortunately he doesn't want to elaborate on that statement!
